I’ve noticed something with pet lovers. Not only are they passionate about pets, but they are passionate about books too.
Especially books about pets.
These are definitely my people!
My love for both animals and books started really early. Combine the 2 and that love got amplified when I read books about pets.
It was a serious love.
Many of the books we had as kids were about animals. My favorite was a sticker book that also told you how to care of every type of pet imaginable. I read it over and over.
Then when I was old enough for a library card, it felt like I had an endless supply of pet books. First, I read through all the pet books in the children’s section. Once I was done I headed to the adult section for more books. When I devoured the books there, I headed over town to an even bigger library to go through their pet book collection.
I was in pet lover heaven.
March is National Reading Month.
It’s a month designated to encourage people to read every day.
Reading gives us so many benefits. Not only is it a great way to spend time, but it helps improve our imagination, our minds and learn new things!
To celebrate National Reading Month and share our love of reading, I asked some of my pet blogging friends what their favorite pet books are.
And they came through with some awesome books for you! Fiction. Nonfiction. Books for adults. Books for children. Cat books. Dog books.
There is something for everyone to add to their reading list.

Merle’s Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog
Recommended by Bonnie from Happyoodles
Merle’s Door is an engaging book about a man and the dog he “found” in the woods. The true story follows the author, Ted Kerasote and his free-thinking dog, Merle as they learn to live together in the hills of the Grand Teton National Park. Throughout the story, Ted provides his observations on Merle’s behaviors. Interspersed with his observations are scientific and veterinary evidence from the past 150 years of research on canine behaviors. It a great read for anyone who wants to understand their dog or who just likes a good dog story.
I loved this book as a kid! Now that I have kids of my own, I can’t wait to read it to them!
