As a kid with both a love for books and for animals, bet you can’t guess what my favorite subject to read about was?
From a little toddler paging through the Golden Books we had, animals have been my number one topic to read about. When I got my library card, I went through the whole pets section in the children’s library. When I was done, I moved onto the pet section in the adult library, When I was done with the pet books in my local library, I moved onto the pet section at the library over town. And once I started working and having my own money, well, I was in heaven at being able to spend my money to have my own little library of pet books.

With reading so many pet books, you might think it would be hard to pick my favorite. It might be except for having an aunt and uncle who knew what to buy an animal loving teenager who wanted to be a vet.
One year for Christmas they got my name in the family gift exchange and bought me what was the best gift I’ve ever received.
A set of books by James Herriot.
Like a lot of would be veterinarians, I love those books. They entertained me. They educated me. They made me see veterinarian life in a way I could never have seen it.
But they aren’t just books for people who want to be a veterinarian. Any pet lover would enjoy reading about the dogs and cats who make up his patients as well as his visits to take care of the animals on the farms.
Have you read any of James Herriot’s books?
I loved reading as a kid and I still do. I’ve never read any books by James…sounds like some good reads. Glad you enjoyed them!
One of my fond favorites. I remember reading an interview with Alfie Wight (Herriot’s real name) in which he said no one ever recognized themselves in his stories. Except for one person–Mrs Pumphrey. Apparently she was able to laugh at herself and didn’t mind his stories one little bit.
His stories are very kind–to people and to animals.
