With 4 dogs and 6 cats there is a lot of hair around my house. My one goal is to not be wearing as much fur as they do. As a former groomer I have a few tools that help. But it doesn’t matter what tools I have if I’m having to fight with with them to use it.
Ricochet, my smooth coated Jack Russell, has always been fine with me brushing him and doing his nails but at the age of 14, he has decided he wants none of it. And he is my worse shedder. So when I got the chance to try the Groom Genie guess who I tried it on first?
The Groom Genie is a detangling brush that is based on a brush designed for people called the Knot Genie. The Knot Genie was invented by Rikki Mor who wanted to keep her daughter from having to deal with the childhood torture of dealing with tangled hair (Is torture too strong a word? I once cut the tangles out of my hair because I didn’t want to deal with getting the tangles taken out so I’m good with calling it torture.). When she began hearing from people who were buying the Knot Genie to use on their pets she developed the Groom Genie.
Groom Genie Details
- Special Bristle Design- The bristles on the Groom Genie are in 3 lengths to help gently tease apart tangles instead of pulling the hair. The bristles also have some flexibility so they give when they hit a tangle. That flexibility can make it easier to brush around lumps and bumps without causing scrapes.
- Special Brush Design- The Groom Genie is made to be held in your hand. It’s paw shape gives you the ability to grip the brush comfortably. The light color bristle area makes parasites and other matter more visible to you.
- Several Sizes- The Groom Genie comes in 2 sizes so you can get a smaller one for small dogs and cats.
- Easy to clean- Hair comes right off the Groom Genie and for more cleaning it can be washed using a little liquid soap or pet shampoo.
- Reduces Grooming Anxiety- The Groom Genie’s gentle design makes grooming easier, less painful and less stressful. Easier, less painful and less stressful makes grooming sessions a positive experience which helps reduces grooming anxiety in pets.
I had high hopes when I went to go use the brush on Ric for the first time. I like to brush outside when possible to keep any lose hair outside. When I went to brush Ric, he was having none of it. He and kept trying to get away from me. He had things to do and bushes to see. Grooming was not on his schedule. I was disappointed. I was hoping he would like how the Groom Genie felt and enjoy it. I decided to try it again when he was quiet and hopefully more receptive. So I starting grooming him where he was comfortable on my bed. This was much better. The blissed out look Ricochet had on his face during the 5 minutes I brushed him told me the Groom Genie was doing it’s job.
I used the brush on some of the other members of my crew- Malarky, Havoc and Mellie as well as cats Poughkeepsie and Minuit. Malarky is a good one for getting tangles and small mats on her underside. With the Groom Genie and 10 minutes I was able to get them out with no sign of discomfort from her. Next I decided to tackle a bigger mat on Mellie’s feathering. I spent about 25 minutes and was able to brush part of the matt out in that time. Minuit has issues dues to arthritis so she needs some short sessions to get her accustomed to grooming(Minuit is not an easy cat to do things with), but everyone else handled the Groom Genie just fine.
When you consider how important grooming is for your pet, you want it to be as stress-free as possible. It should be an enjoyable experience. If you have a pet that doesn’t like being groomed, that is prone to getting tangles or that just loves a good brushing, the Groom Genie would be the perfect brush to add to your grooming box.

What a great idea! I use the Tangle Teaser on my own hair, which is a variation of the Knot Genie I would assume, and it makes sense to use one on dogs! I’m betting my Oscar would also “bliss out” at a comb with one.
Sounds like a great product if you have a pet!
My doggies both have short hair but my daughters would probably enjoy The Knot Genie!
I love this brush! I honestly have not used it, but it sure sounds wonderful. I have two Labradoodles that don’t shed at all but still need daily brushing to look cute. I’m definitely going to try this out. Thanks for sharing!!!
This looks like it works great! Thanks for including the before and after picture. I’ll be sure to recommend this to my friends and family with dogs.
What a great review! I don’t have pets but I do find that my mom usually struggles to keep her dogs groomed, so this might be something to recommend for her. I also didn’t know about that knot genie, I think I might need that! 🙂 Also, a house full of cats and dogs sounds so incredibly loving and fun (although I’m sure it’s a ton of work!). Glad to have found your site through the commentathon! 🙂
I love the before and after pics. What a cute puppy! You can tell that the product did its job.
This is a wonderful product. I think my long haired lasa apso/shitzu mix will love this. Great product recommendation.
This looks like a cool product! Our kitten Jule, is long-haired, and we are trying to get him used to being brushed when he’s still small. This would be a great product to recommend to his new family once we find him a home.
Your before andafter photos are awesome! We don’t have any pets but this might make a great gift for our friends and family that do. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for providing this review! There are so many products out there and I hate buying something and then finding out it doesn’t work. The before and after pictures were great.
Luckily my cat doesn’t shed too much, but I think this tool would still be useful for her. Thanks for a great review on the product.
My daughter has 2 Yorkies. I’ll have to share this with her. It would help he a lot. Cute fur baby!
We don’t own any pets, but it looks like a great product for those who do. Nice review!
Ah, what a difference it makes! I shall be sure to recommend this product…The before and after pictures show the difference for sure!
This will make a great Christmas present for pet owners!
Your little guy is a cutie!
I need to get two of these for my mom. She has a small and big dog and they both shed quite a bit.
Great info. This wasn’t the intended purpose of your post, but I am going to have to try the Knot Genie with my daughters!
Wow, looks like a great tool for pet owners to have! Nothing worse than pet hair all over the place!
I’ve never heard of this but I have a husky which has enough hair for 3 dogs! I am always looking for tools to help deshed her. She luckily is brushed enough that she doesn’t get mats or tangles very often, but oh the hair! I wonder if this tool would work well on her!
Looks like a great product for pet owners! I might have to check out the Knot Genie for my daughter…
I wish this product had been around years ago when I had a huge long haired dog that needed a lot of brushing! I don’t have any animals right now that require brushing.
That looks like a great new brush :D…I haven’t heard of it before.
Oh, this is great! Our dog HATES her bath. It takes my husband forever to get through all of her tangles. Gotta check this out.
What a neat brush. Our dog tends to get a lot of matted hair so I’ll have to check out the Groom Genie.
Looks like a great product! Thanks for the review. 🙂
This looks like a great product!! Our dog loves to be brushed, and this one looks like it would be a lot more comfortable in my hand.
That brush seems great. It looks like one I have here which is highly efficient.
what a great idea for those who have pets! 😀
This looks like it would be great for the shelter dogs at the Whatcom Humane Society!
